MOVING FROM THE TRADITIONAL SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION TO A LANGUAGE THAT ENGAGES THE SOCIETY

Communicating cutting-edge scientific knowledge to scientists from other disciplines or to a general public is challeging but of crucial important if we want to involve the society in solving environmental issues. For our work Molecular composition of organic matter controls methylmercury formation in boreal lakes, we have created three conceptual videos that aim to facilitate the understanding of the main findings. Despite these videos do not give a complete version of the mercury biogeochemical cycle, they show the relevance and impact of the molecular composition of organic matter for determining where methylmercury is formed within catchments. Please watch the three videos

Molecular Composition of Organic Matter Controls Methylmercury Formation in Boreal Lakes, PART 1
: this video illustrates the formation of methylmercury in lakes characterized by low inputs of terrestrial organic matter and affected by seasonal phytoplankton blooms. In this type of lakes, phytoplankton derived organic matter enhances in situ methylmercury formation by boosting the activity of the microbial communities inhabiting lake sediments.

Molecular Composition of Organic Matter Controls Methylmercury Formation in Boreal Lakes, PART 2
: this video illustrates the source of  methylmercury for dark oligotrophic lakes tipically found in the boreal biome. For this type of lakes, methylmercury concentrations in sediments are controlled by the inputs of methylmercury formed in soils and wetlands of the catchment.

Molecular Composition of Organic Matter Controls Methylmercury Formation in Boreal Lakes, PART 3
: this video combines both PART 1 and PART 2 illustrating the different processes and sources of methylmercury for the different kind of lakes.

VISITING SCHOOLS TO INCREASE AWARENESS ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

By explaining the effects of pollutants, I aim to increase the knowledge and awareness of environmental issues. Our young generations have the power to maintain and improve the quality of aquatic ecosystems.

WHY TO CHOOSE A SCIENTIFIC BACHELOR DEGREE?

It is of crucial importance to understand and predict the fate and threats of pollutants in the environment. I work on transfering my passion and dedication to science to the next generation of scientists.
